Matthew 16:18, “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Think
t’s a great feeling to be part of a winning team. But that elation can quickly move us into a pit of despair when we lose. It’s easy to say, “That’s life. We’ll just have to deal with it.” But living with it is sometimes easier said than done.In a way, that’s what Jesus was trying to prepare His disciples for. They’d followed Him for three years; they’d witnessed His miracles and heard His teachings. And, yet, He knew they still weren’t ready for the challenge they’d soon face. Why? Because they didn’t understand that, as the Messiah, He’d change everything — but something had to first be lost.Peter shows great insight. In Matthew 18:16, when Jesus asks, “Who do you say that I am?”, Peter responds, “You are the Messiah, Son of the living God.” It’s then that Jesus declares His church would be built on solid rock and would experience ultimate victory. But before they experienced victory, they were going to experience the agony of defeat. The strategies we devise for the games and politics in this life will always have winners and losers, ups and downs. That’s life! But there’s only one way to guarantee to be part of the eternal winner’s circle — having a relationship with Jesus Christ and being a part of what He declared hell would not prevail against — THE CHURCH.
Act
If you are not a part of Jesus’ winner’s circle yet, it’s time to make a move. Ask leaders in a local church to help guide you towards having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It’s the absolute best decision you’ll ever make!
Pray
Heavenly Father, I’m tired of wondering if I’ll win or lose. I focus so much time on strategies and game plans of my own that I find myself dismissing Your plans. Help me align with Your best — knowing Jesus personally and being a part of His church. Help me commit to Your winning plan. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
