Listening for God's Guidance
July 29, 2023
Read:
Numbers 22:21-34 "So Balaam rose in the morning and saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab. And God's anger was kindled because he went, and the angel of the Lord took his stand in the way as his adversary. Now he was riding on the donkey, and his two servants were with him."
Think:
The narrative of Balaam and his donkey is a lesson in humility and obedience. Despite clearly understanding God's will, Balaam allowed his pride and personal desires to divert him from God's path. But in his infinite wisdom and mercy, God used an unlikely instrument, a simple donkey, to guide Balaam back to his path.
As they travelled, Balaam’s donkey repeatedly stopped, refusing to move forward on their journey. The donkey could see the angel of the Lord in their path with his sword drawn, though Balaam could not. Balaam chided and whipped the donkey until the donkey finally turned and began to speak, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” Then God opened Balaam’s eyes so that he could see the angel that was blocking their path. In humility, Balaam fell to the ground in repentance.
Sometimes, we can be like Balaam, consumed with our agendas and desires, and we can miss God's guidance. God is working for our good. When we trust him, he will lead us on the right path.

This week, try to quiet your voice and listen for God's. In humility, seek his direction.
Pray:
Heavenly Father, guide us in your ways and give us the humility to follow your path. Help us to recognize and listen to your voice throughout our day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
