Love is Not

January 31, 2023

Read:

1 Corinthians 13:4, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.”

Ephesians 4:2, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

Think:

Have you ever been delayed at an airport surrounded by hundreds of sweaty people, irritated, tired, and wanting to get home? Maybe you have been waiting in a plane sitting on the tarmac, and the steward told you it would be a 15-minute delay which turned into 30 minutes, then 60-and then 90 minutes. The crowd turns into a mob. Patience really is a virtue.

Life can be frustrating, even exasperating. However, impatience can be a reflection of our self-absorption and our self-centeredness in response to life’s disappointments. Real love is pictured in the Bible as self-sacrifice; it is demonstrated by patience. It sets aside our personal agenda and plans; it seeks to model Jesus. Although it does appear to be impossible, which it is if we attempt it in our own strength, God will provide us with patience. He supplies us with patience through the Holy Spirit so that we might show that toward others to lead them to Him.

So as we pray for help, God supplies us with patience that reflects Himself- even during frustrating circumstances.

Act:

Memorize 1 Corinthians 13:4 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” Think about the events that brought you where you are today. How has God been patient with you? How can an increase in patience change a troubled relationship you may have?

Pray:

Jesus, I am grateful You are long-suffering with me. Thank you for Your gentleness and Your goodness. Help me to show patience with my family and friends today so that they will see You at work in my life. Amen.
