Obedience

October 11, 2023

Read

Ephesians 6:1-3 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise— ‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’”

Think

The Duke of Windsor once said, “The thing that impresses me most about America is the way parents obey their children.”

Every parent encounters the trials of dealing with disobedient children, from the young toddler just discovering the word "no" to the older teenager rebelling against authority. Disobedience, at its core, isn't solely a child's issue; it's a reflection of the inherent struggle with sin that we all face. The Bible underscores our universal desire for self-control and autonomy, a battle against yielding to external authority.

When disobedience is left unaddressed, this struggle for self-rule can escalate into a protracted conflict within our children. Its impact extends far beyond the family, affecting their relationships with teachers, friends, future spouses, employers, aging parents, and even their connection with their heavenly Father.

Proper, biblical discipline is the key to equipping a child for a life characterized by purpose and godliness. It provides her with the best chance to navigate life's challenges and develop a strong moral foundation.

Apply

Obedience isn't easy. Pray for wisdom and give consistent, appropriate consequences when disobedience occurs.

Pray

Jesus, make me more like you. Give me wisdom and determination. Show me where I need to be more consistent so I can reflect your faithfulness and priorities to my children. Let me make an impact for you with my family. In Jesus' name. Amen.
