What Is a True Church?

September 23, 2024

Read

Acts 2:42 "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."
Matthew 28:19-20 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of theHoly Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Think

When you think of “church,” what pops into your head? Maybe it’s a building with stained glass windows, a Sunday morning service, or a group of people singing together. A true church is more than just a place or an event—it’s a gathering of people who come together in Jesus’ name, committed to living out his mission. A real church teaches the Bible faithfully and helps its members in their walk with Christ. Without these key pieces, a church loses its true purpose and focus.

The church isn’t a club or social group; it’s a living, breathing community centered on Jesus Christ. Charles Spurgeon once said, “A church that does not evangelize will fossilize.” The church’s primary mission is to make disciples, to reach out to a world in desperate need of hope and truth. True churches are not marked by perfection but by genuinely pursuing Christ and his Word. They are places where grace is lived out, truth is taught, and lives are transformed.

A true church is also defined by its love for one another, reflecting the love of Christ. Jesus said in John 13:35, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” This love isn’t just a feeling—it’s an action. It means supporting each other, offering grace, and walking through life’s ups and downs together. A true church is where the broken find healing, the lost find direction, and the weary find rest.

In the end, a true church is Christ’s living, breathing representation on earth. It’s not about fancy buildings or the size of the congregation—it’s about the heart of the people who are committed to Jesus and each other. When a church stays focused on loving well, teaching the truth, and sharing the gospel, it becomes a shining light to the world, showing others the hope found in Christ. That’s what God intended the church to be: a beacon of hope and truth.

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the gift of the church, where we can gather in your name and grow together in faith. Help me to be a part of a church that faithfully follows your Word, loves others deeply, and shares the message of Jesus with the world. Teach me to support and encourage those around me and guide me to live out your love in my community. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
