Does My Vote Matter?

November 2, 2024

Read

Proverbs 3:27 "Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act."
James 4:17 "If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them."

Think

In a world of more than seven billion people, it’s easy to feel like one person can’t make a real difference, especially when it comes to voting. Many Christians, too, have concluded that their vote doesn’t matter. In fact, according to a recent Arizona Christian University study, only 51% of Christians said they were likely to vote in the 2024 election. That means millions of believers are choosing to not participate. But history shows us that one vote can absolutely change the course of events.

Consider these examples: In 1868, one vote in the U.S. Senate saved President Andrew Johnson from removal from office. In 1916, if Charles E. Hughes had received one more vote per precinct in California, he would have defeated Woodrow Wilson. In 1955, the mayor of Huron, Ohio, was elected by a single vote. These moments remind us that one vote can shift the direction of history.

For Christians, voting is more than a civic duty—it’s a reflection of our values. Each of us has a role as part of the Body of Christ. Just as our prayers and our testimony matter, so does our vote. God has placed us in this moment for a reason, allowing us to shape our communities for the good. When we fail to participate, the whole “body” misses out on the impact we could have had.

So, when you wonder if your vote matters, remember that God can use your voice to make a difference, no matter how small it seems. Just as one person can change the course of history, your vote can help shape the future.

Apply

Research the issues and candidates through a lens of faith and reflect on how your choices can align with biblical values. Remember that your vote is a way to do good and influence the world for Jesus.

Pray

Heavenly Father, guide me as I prepare to vote, giving me wisdom and clarity to make decisions that honor you. Help me to stand firm in my faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
