Election

Read

John 15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.”
Titus 3:5 "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit."

Think

George Whitefield once said, "Let a man go to the grammar school of faith and repentance before he goes to the university of election and predestination." There’s wisdom in that. Election, one of the most profound doctrines, isn’t meant to overshadow our personal response to God’s call. It’s God’s choice, motivated by his grace and love, not by anything we’ve done. As Ephesians 1:4 says, “God chose us in Christ before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.” Election points to God’s sovereign grace that is extended to us, but doesn’t bypass our need to respond in faith.

The beauty of God's grace is that it allows us the freedom to choose. Romans 10:13 reminds us, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." God initiates the invitation, but we must exercise our free will to accept it. His grace empowers us to respond, making salvation not a forced reality but a gift we receive with open hearts.

At its core, election reflects God's guidance in leading us toward salvation. Philippians 2:13 assures us that God works within us to fulfill his good purpose. While he leads, God never violates our freedom. Salvation is a gift, freely given, not earned by our merit (Ephesians 2:8). This truth should bring us peace, knowing that God’s grace reaches out to us, drawing us closer to him.

As we think about election and grace, our response should be gratitude and action. John 6:37 says, "Whoever comes to me, I will never drive away." God’s grace welcomes all, but it’s up to us to receive it. And once we do, we are called to share this good news, announcing God’s grace to the world.

Apply

If you haven’t already, consider responding to his invitation by committing your life to him or reaffirming that commitment. Think about one person you can share the gospel's good news with and be a part of their salvation story.

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank you for your grace and love for choosing me to be a part of your family. I am humbled by the gift of salvation you’ve given so freely. Help me to respond to your call with a heart full of faith and gratitude. Give me the courage to share your love and grace with others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
