Facts, Not Feelings
Read
Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Think
Think of Michael Scott from The Office. In the episode “Money,” he lets his emotions run the show, diving into debt in a desperate attempt to impress and feel validated. Driven by pride, he buys things he can’t afford, convinced this will somehow lead to happiness or approval. But his emotional decisions soon catch up with him, leaving him overwhelmed and trying to “declare bankruptcy” by simply shouting it in the office. Michael’s choices highlight how, when feelings drive us, we can lose sight of solid, grounded facts and end up with consequences we never intended.
The Bible reminds us that acting on truth, not emotion, builds a strong foundation. Jesus speaks directly to this in Matthew 7:24-25, describing the wise person who “hears these words of mine and puts them into practice,” building a house on the rock rather than on sand. While emotions can shift like the sand—sometimes pulling us toward things that feel good in the moment—God’s truth is the rock that remains steady. We gain stability even in turbulent times when we build our decisions on God’s principles rather than feelings.
Scripture also teaches the importance of self-control and discernment. Proverbs 4:26 advises us, “Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.” This principle is practical wisdom: choosing actions based on solid truth, not fleeting emotions, keeps us steady on a safe path. Even when emotions try to lead us off course, facts—rooted in God’s guidance—give us a clear direction.
So, when life’s challenges and emotions press in, remember to step back and assess your actions against God’s unchanging truth. By making choices based on facts and sound principles, we find a peace and resilience that no emotion can unsettle.
Apply
When faced with a decision, take a moment to pause and write down two lists: one with your initial feelings about the situation and another with the facts or biblical principles that apply. This quick exercise helps separate emotions from truth, giving you a clearer perspective. Then pray over the lists.
Pray
Lord, help me to trust your truth over my feelings. When emotions try to take control, remind me to pause and lean on your wisdom. Guide me to make choices that honor you, even when it’s hard. Thank you for being my steady foundation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
