Hearing From God
January 9, 2025
Read
1 Samuel 3:10 “The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’”
Think
“Does God still speak to us today?” It’s a question that feels deeply personal, especially when life feels overwhelming or uncertain. We long to hear his voice, to sense his guidance breaking through the chaos. The story of Samuel is a powerful reminder that God is speaking. The real question is: are we in the right position to hear him?
Samuel’s name, from the Hebrew Shemuel, means “heard from God.” Isn’t that incredible? His life began with a moment of hearing God’s voice, and his story in 1 Samuel 3 shows us how we can do the same.
Picture Samuel, a young boy lying quietly in the temple. The darkness of the night, the soft flicker of the lamp—this was the setting where God called his name. First, Samuel was near the lamp, a symbol of God’s Word. To the Jewish people, the lamp represented the Scriptures, described in Psalm 119 as “a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” When we open the Bible, we aren’t just reading words; we’re entering a sacred conversation with the Creator of the universe.
Second, Samuel was in God’s temple, surrounded by the faith community. How often do we underestimate the value of being in a church or small group? It’s in these spaces—alongside others who are seeking him—that God’s voice often becomes clearer and more undeniable.
Finally, Samuel was near the Ark of the Covenant, the physical symbol of God’s presence. He placed himself near where God was. For us, this means creating moments of stillness, prayer, and worship—spaces where we can tune in to his whisper instead of the world’s noise.
God is not silent. He’s speaking through his Word, his people, and the quiet spaces we make for him. Are you ready to hear him? This week, take a step closer—open your Bible, reconnect with your faith community, and sit in stillness before him. God is calling.

Pray
God, thank you for always speaking and drawing near to us. Help me to quiet my heart, seek you in your Word, and listen for your voice. Guide me to take steps that align with your will and bring me closer to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
