The phrase "In God We Trust" carries a deep significance beyond its appearance on the currency. It first appeared on U.S. coins in 1864 during the Civil War—a time of national division and hardship. With the nation in crisis, many citizens urged the government to acknowledge its need for God. In response, Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase directed the Mint to add the phrase to coins, as a symbol of the country’s reliance on divine guidance during troubled times.

In the middle of the Cold War in 1956, during another season of uncertainty, "In God We Trust" was adopted as the official motto of the United States. The world was facing a looming ideological battle with atheistic communism, and this phrase served as a national declaration that America's foundation was built on faith in God, not on worldly power. In times of elections—whether in the turmoil of the Civil War or the fear of the Cold War—this motto reminded Americans that their true security was found not in political leaders, but in divine protection.

Elections can bring uncertainty and anxiety with shifting leaders and policies. But as Christians, "In God We Trust" offers a grounding truth: our hope is not tied to any political outcome or human system. Instead, it lies in God’s sovereign control over all things. Just as the phrase on our currency reminds us that money is not where our ultimate trust should be placed, it also encourages us, during election seasons, to remember that our faith is in God, not in political parties or candidates.

As we approach each election, let "In God We Trust" be more than just words on money. Let it remind us to put our faith in the One who is unchanging, no matter the political climate. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) encourages us to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." This truth is as relevant in the voting booth as it is in every other area of life.
