Read: John 2

John 2:2-5 “When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, ‘They have no more wine.’ ‘Woman, why do you involve me?’ Jesus replied. ‘My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’”

Weddings can be costly, and planning one on a budget is challenging. This was likely true for the unnamed couple whose wedding Jesus, his mother, and his disciples attended in Cana of Galilee. This story is found only in John's Gospel, which recounts Jesus performing his first miracle, turning water into wine.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, was at the wedding and seemed involved in the arrangements, possibly helping with the food and wine. When the wine ran out, she turned to Jesus for help, telling the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” This simple yet profound instruction set the stage for a miraculous event. Jesus instructed the servants to fill six large stone jars with water. Without any fanfare, he turned this water into wine, which the head steward praised as the best wine served at the wedding. This miracle was more than a solution to a logistical problem; it revealed Jesus' divine power and glory.

Mary's directive to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you,” carries profound wisdom for us as well. It is a call to obedience and trust. It reminds us that Jesus, who can change water into wine, can transform our lives and situations in ways we cannot imagine. When we follow his guidance, no matter how unconventional, we open the door to experiencing his power and provision.

This simple instruction given to the servants at the wedding carries a profound message for all of us. It's a call to obedience, trust, and faith. It reminds us that our relationship with God goes beyond just believing in him; it also involves following his instructions, even when they don't make sense. Mary didn't give detailed directions—she simply said, "Do whatever he tells you." This straightforward command emphasizes the importance of trusting Jesus completely and acting on his words to be a part of a miracle.

What step of faith and what step of obedience is your next step? Are you giving 10 percent in tithes? Are you serving? Take your next step and see where God takes you.

Pray

Jesus, teach me to have that same obedience, trust, and faith in you. Help me follow your guidance, even when it doesn't make sense to me. I ask for the humility to surrender my will and desires to yours. Show me where I need to let go of my pride and self-will, and give me the strength to submit to your direction in every aspect of my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
