Read: John 21

John 21:17 “The third time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep.’”

Think

Remember how Peter boldly proclaimed at the Last Supper that he would never abandon Jesus? Moments later, he reiterated his unwavering devotion, insisting he would never fall away. Yet, when the moment of truth came, Peter denied knowing Jesus three times before the rooster crowed. His courage failed him, leaving him with overwhelming guilt and shame.

Jesus knew Peter needed restoration. The cross was about freeing us from guilt and sin, so after his resurrection, Jesus sought Peter out. They shared breakfast, and Jesus gently asked Peter three times, “Do you love me?” Each time, Peter responded, “Yes, Lord; you know I love you.”

Jesus reassured him, instructed him to "feed my sheep," and reaffirmed Peter’s place in his plan. Despite Peter’s denial, his role in Jesus' mission remained unchanged.

Reflecting on Peter's journey, Andreas Köstenberger notes, "Perhaps at long last Peter has learned that he cannot follow Jesus in his strength... Likewise, we should soundly distrust self-serving pledges of loyalty today that betray self-reliance rather than a humble awareness of one’s limitations." Jesus demonstrated that our strength is insufficient, but his love and grace are boundless. Jesus didn't abandon Peter in his failure. Instead, he sought him out, reassured him of his love, and entrusted him with a mission. Peter went on to preach at Pentecost, the day the gospel spread to the world. He was the first to bring the gospel to the Gentiles, served as the pastor of the church in Jerusalem, and was eventually martyred by Nero, crucified upside down for the gospel of Jesus. This shows us that God's love and power are greater than our sins and shame.”

Jesus' love and forgiveness are steadfast. Just as he restored Peter, he offers us the same grace. Let’s embrace his grace and mercy, discover our role in his mission, and trust that he will use us despite our imperfections. We are called to participate in his great mission, no matter how many times we stumble.

Apply

Is there a poor decision or regret that continues to haunt you? Do you wonder if God loves you less? Remember this story every time you begin to doubt the full expanse of God’s forgiveness and grace.

Pray

Jesus, thank you for your unconditional love. When I begin to doubt my relationship with you, remind me that it is your faithfulness, not my efforts, that keeps me tethered to you. Help me to rely on you, rather than my own strength, to live out my loyalty. In Jesus name. Amen.
