John 8:31-32 “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’”

Aeroflot Flight 593 from Moscow to Hong Kong, a flight that ended in tragedy on March 23, 1994, serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of having the right person in charge. In a moment of misplaced trust, the captain allowed his children into the cockpit. His 15-year-old son unknowingly disengaged the autopilot while seated in the captain’s chair. As the boy innocently tried to steer the plane, the aircraft began to bank sharply, spiraling out of control. The pilots, realizing the gravity of the situation too late, fought desperately to regain control, but the damage was done. The aircraft crashed, resulting in a devastating loss of life and leaving behind shattered families and an indelible mark on aviation history.

This heart-wrenching disaster underscores the critical need for Jesus, not just as our “co-pilot, especially in moments of crisis. Just as an airplane requires a skilled pilot to navigate safely through the skies, our lives require Jesus to guide us through our trials and tribulations. Jesus said in John 8:31-32, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." When we surrender complete control to Jesus, we align ourselves with his truth and wisdom, ensuring that his perfect guidance directs our lives. As Corrie Ten Boom said, "Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God." With Jesus in charge, we can face the unknown with confidence and peace.

Think about the times when you’ve felt the urge to take control, steering your path according to your limited understanding. Perhaps you’ve found yourself in situations where everything seemed to be falling apart, and despite your best efforts, you couldn’t fix it. These are the moments we must remember to let Jesus lead. Just as the tragic event of Flight 593 illustrates the peril of having the wrong person at the controls, our lives can descend into chaos when we fail to follow Christ’s teachings. By trusting in Jesus and holding to his teachings, we find freedom, direction, and the assurance that we are not alone in our struggles. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

We can commit to keeping Jesus at the helm of our lives. By immersing ourselves in his Word and living out his teachings, we become true disciples set free by his truth. When we face the storms of life, let us remember that with Jesus in charge, we are safe and secure. His guidance and wisdom will lead us through any turbulence, bringing us safely to our intended destination. When we feel the most lost and vulnerable in our darkest moments, we trust that he will calm the storm and guide us home. As Psalm 46:1 assures us, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."
