Matthew 20:26-28 “Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

During the American Revolution, a noncommissioned officer was barking orders at soldiers struggling to lift a heavy wooden beam. As they labored, a passerby stopped and asked the officer why he wasn't helping. With the arrogance of his rank, the officer replied, "Sir, I am a corporal!" The passerby, with a smile, said, "I didn't know that. My apologies, Corporal." Then, he rolled up his sleeves and helped the soldiers lift the beam. Once the job was done, he revealed himself as General Washington and said, "Mr. Corporal, if you have another tough job and not enough men, send for your Commander-in-Chief, and I'll come help you again." The corporal was speechless.

God measures greatness by service. Jesus set the ultimate example: though he was God, he "did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28). Imagine taking on that role yourself. Be the family member who offers to wash the dishes after dinner, the neighbor who mows the lawn for elderly residents, or the friend who always lends a helping hand. Serving others not only helps them but also brings joy to you. Doing good does the doer good.

What if everyone took on a servant's mindset? Imagine the difference in marriages if spouses focused on serving each other. Think about politicians who prioritize serving their people over their own interests. Picture churches filled with genuine servants—how many more people would hear the message of Jesus? Service spreads the gospel.

In a world often driven by self-interest, those who follow Christ are called to serve. It's not just an add-on; it's central to being a disciple. Whether you're a preacher, a volunteer, a parent, or a caretaker, every act of service matters to God. Service isn't just a path to greatness; it is greatness. Jesus said, "If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all" (Mark 9:35). When we serve with this heart, we glorify God and show his love. As Paul wrote, "It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me" (Galatians 2:20). Embrace your calling to serve today, and you'll make a lasting impact far greater than living for yourself ever could.
