Matthew 1:23 "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us").
Think
Plans for the perfect Christmas often swirl in our minds—the ideal decorations, the flawless menu, the laughter of family gathered. Hosting a Christmas party, especially with both sides of the family, can feel like a dream, but can also be daunting. Somewhere amid the planning, it’s easy to get tangled in details and expectations. By the time the guests arrive, what was meant to be joyful can feel exhausting.
It might start with something small, like a debate over tree lights—blinking colored versus classic white. Or the realization that the festive napkins are missing, and there’s no pan big enough for the turkey. When the party begins, the house is full of activity—kids playing, grandparents napping, and adults reconnecting. Yet, despite the laughter, there’s a sense that something is missing.
After the guests leave, the quiet brings clarity. Christmas isn’t about the perfect party, the lights, or the shiny packages. Luke 2:7 reminds us of that first Christmas: “She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger.” There was no perfection that night, just the humble miracle of Jesus’ birth. Isaiah 7:14 echoes this truth: “The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).”
In the rush of the season, we can lose sight of what truly matters. Jesus didn’t come so we could create flawless celebrations—he came to be God with us, to bring hope, peace, and salvation. His presence is the heart of Christmas, the gift that fills the emptiness no decorations or traditions ever can.
This season, take time to pause and reflect on the real meaning of Christmas. Let go of the need for perfection and embrace the miracle of Jesus’ presence. The joy of Christmas isn’t found in the busyness—it’s found in the Savior who came to dwell among us. Immanuel, God with us, is the gift that changes everything.
Apply
Identify one area where you’re striving for perfection this season—decorations, food, or schedules—and ask Jesus to enable you to let it go. Spend time with him instead.
Pray
Lord Jesus, thank you for coming into our world as Immanuel—God with us. In the busyness of this season, help me to pause and remember the true gift of Christmas: your presence and your salvation. Help me to focus on the peace and joy that you bring and share that with others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
