What Is God’s Plan for the Church?

August 24, 2024

Read

1 Peter 4:10 "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
Ephesians 4:16 "From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work."
Matthew 28:19-20 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Think

God's plan for the church is a beautiful tapestry of community, purpose, and mission. The church is both a visible community of believers and the invisible spiritual body of Christ. This dual nature highlights the significance of our unity and the divine purpose behind our gathering. The church isn't just a building or a Sunday event; it's a living, breathing entity through which God works to bring his grace and truth to the world.

Think about the early church in Acts 2:42-47. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. This community shared everything they had, met together daily, and praised God with sincere hearts. Their unity and love for one another were so compelling that "the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." This passage illustrates the church as a vibrant community where faith is nurtured, and lives are transformed.

Think of the church as a potluck dinner. Everyone brings their unique dish to share, and together we create a feast that nourishes everyone. Imagine showing up to a potluck where everyone brought the same potato salad—pretty bland, right? The beauty of a potluck, like the church, is in the diversity and the contributions of each person. God has given each of us unique gifts and talents to enrich our community and accomplish his mission. As Ephesians 4:16 says, "From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work."

John Stott once said, “The church lies at the very center of the eternal purpose of God. It is not a divine afterthought; it is not an accident of history.” We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus, serving others, and proclaiming the gospel. Our collective mission is to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything Jesus commanded (Matthew 28:19-20).
