You don't have to empty the whole closet today—just open the door with God, and then with one person.

1 Kings 19:13-18 answers Elijah's twice-repeated "I am the only one left" with a correction: God has reserved seven thousand who never bowed to Baal. Elijah had appointed himself scorekeeper of faithfulness, and his math was wildly off because he was counting from inside a cave. The call is to stop keeping score, to trust that we're never as alone as despair insists, and to reach toward the 7,000 God can still open our eyes to see.

Matthew 5:16 closes the week with a question: when is your light the brightest? Not when you're kind to your best friend—everybody does that. It shines brightest when you love someone the world says you don't have to. Like a candle that barely does much in a lit room but lights up a whole dark closet, kindness stands out most in the middle of meanness. And the point isn't to make you look good; it's so people wonder where that kindness comes from and look up to God. That's your purpose—go be a candle where it's needed most.

Acts 4:34-37 places Barnabas right next to Ananias, and their actions are identical—sell property, bring the money, lay it at the apostles' feet—yet one is the son of encouragement and one drops dead. The difference was never visible; it was the heart, which only God can see. So the test isn't what you do Wednesday night but who you are Thursday when no one's watching: would you still do it if no one ever found out?

1 Kings 19:11-12 teaches that God was not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, but in the gentle whisper. We keep looking for God in the spectacular while He most often speaks in the quiet. Pairing the story with the H.A.L.T. check—Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired—the devotional warns against elevating feelings to the throne and urges us to address our needs before trusting a decision made from an unstable place.

Matthew 5:44 comes to life through a made-up kid named Sam, teased every day on the bus about his shoes. Sam did the smart thing first—he told his mom, because getting help is never tattling. But he also started praying for the mean kid, and slowly he stopped being so scared, because he knew he was loved by God and no mean kid could take that away. Praying does two things: God works on their heart and protects yours, keeping their meanness from turning you mean. You're not powerless—you have grownups who can help and a God bigger than any bully.

Acts 5:7-9 gives Sapphira one chance to tell the truth, and she picks the agreed-on story instead. We all curate a version of ourselves—dangerous when we do it with our faith—but God has already seen the whole camera roll and hasn't walked away, so the exhausting work of keeping up an image was never required.

1 Kings 19:9-10 turns on a single question God asks Elijah in the cave: "What are you doing here?" God wasn't after information; He was inviting honest reflection, the way a good counselor draws the truth out rather than handing it over. The devotional asks us to sit with that same question and give the unedited answer—the frustration, fear, and weariness—trusting that revealing the feeling is the beginning of healing.

Matthew 5:48 might worry you at first—be perfect? Nobody's perfect. But take a breath: the word here means something more like "grown up" or "finished growing." Jesus is saying keep growing up in the way you love, like a small wobbly apple tree that over time gets strong enough to be full of fruit. God doesn't expect you to love perfectly today, and when you mess up He doesn't give up on you. Every time you choose love, even a tiny bit, you grow more like Him. He's not finished with you yet—and that's good news.
